Supplies:

• Lemons
• Baking soda
• Food coloring
• Dish soap
• Plate or bowl
• Fork

Steps:

1. Have an adult help cut some lemons in half. Place one half of a lemon onto a plate or bowl.
2. Take your fork and poke the top of the lemon in different sections. This will help create the volcano eruption.
3. Next, take your food coloring and place droplets around the top of the lemon. Use different colors in different sections if you want a colorful volcano or just use one color!
4. Add some dish soap across the top of the lemon. Then sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda on top! Use your fork again to get the baking soda down into the rest of the lemon.
5. Now watch as your lemon volcano erupts! Want a bigger reaction? Take the other half of the lemon and squeeze the juice onto the volcano.

Supplies Needed:

• Recycled toilet paper rolls
• Tissue paper
• Google-y eyes
• Dowel rods or chopsticks. A stick collected from nature would work too!
• Tape or Glue
• Construction paper
• Pipe cleaners (one per critter)
  

Steps:

Step One:

• Cut the paper roll down to the size you’d like your critter to be

Step Two:

• Fold your tissue paper in half 
• Cut a section off; approximately about an inch
• Fringe one section of the tissue paper leaving around 1cm gap at the top
• Unfold the fringed paper then cut into lengths long enough to wrap around the paper roll

Step Three:

• Place a piece of tape (or glue) along each section of your fringed paper
• Stick to the paper roll to look like an animal’s fur
• Layer the pieces of tissue paper over the top of each other around the paper roll, until you have completely covered it in “tissue paper fur”
  

Step Four:

• Fold a piece of your construction paper in half and sketch a large heart shape for the wings
• Cut pieces of pipe cleaner for antennae and tape (or glue) those on
• Tape (or glue) the Googly eyes, and heart shapes into place
• Tape (or glue) the dowel rod or chopstick into place at the bottom of the roll
  

Supplies:

• Paper towel tubes
• Cardstock/paper
• Scissors
• Tape (we recommend painter’s tape to keep painted walls intact!)
• Pom-poms

Instructions:

1. Start by taking some of your paper/cardstock and cut in half to make smaller sections. Gather your paper towel tubes as well.
2. Tape the pieces of paper onto the wall in the shape of a tunnel. It is now also the time to incorporate the paper towel tubes on the wall as well!  Make sure you are spreading them out and creating a course that pom-poms can follow!
3. Once all of your pieces of paper and tubes are taped on the wall in a course design, time to test it out! Take some pom-poms and start at the top. Have some fun!

Need inspiration?

• Have you ever seen George Rhoads’ audiokinetic ball machine sculptures at Logan Airport or the Museum of Science in Boston? Here’s a video of a similar Rube Goldberg-type ball machine at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.
• You can also think about the cool marble run creations you’ve made in the past!

Tips: 

• Have bouncy balls or ping pong balls? Test those out instead of pom-poms!
• You can always un-tape the course and create a new design!

Materials:

• Empty tin cans
• Paint & paint brushes
• A ball

Steps: 

1. Begin by making sure your tin cans are empty and clean! Wash them off and then make sure they are dry.
2. Next, paint your tin cans! You can paint them different colors, add some designs or even paint them the same colors. Paint them however you would like!
3. After that, it is now time to wait for them to dry.
4. Once the paint is dry, it is now time to play! Set them up in your yard or driveway. You can set them up like bowling pins or you can stack them on top of each other like a pyramid. Try to knock them down with a ball of your choice!

Materials: 

• Chalk
• Sponges
• A bucket of water

Steps:

1. Start by drawing out your game board! Your game board will look very similar to a dart board. Start by drawing one small circle then keep going by drawing circles around it. Make sure to leave plenty of space between the circles though.
2. For each circle, assign an amount of points. Typically, the smallest circle is worth the most points since it is the hardest to get.
3. After you are finished with your game board, it’s time to get playing! Gather some sponges and a bucket of water. Wet your sponges and start throwing! Keep track of your points on the side by writing them down with chalk.
4. After 5 rounds, add all of your points up! Then keep playing!

Another fun way to do this during the summer is to use water balloons instead of sponges!

Materials:

• Sidewalk chalk
• Painter’s tape (duct tape or masking tape will work as well if that is all you have)

Steps:

1. Take long pieces of your tape and lay them down on the ground. Create shapes with the tape such as rectangles and triangles. Overlapping the tape will also create cool effects!
2. After you have made your stained glass outline, start to color it in with your chalk! Use different colors for different spots to really create that stained glass look.
3. Once you are all finished coloring, it is time to remove the tape! Carefully and slowly remove the tape. Your masterpiece will be finished!

Supplies Needed:

• Empty Ribbon Spools
• Paper Straws
• Card Stock
• Decorative Washi Tape
• Ribbon or Twine
• Wood Beads or Bells
• Glue

Steps Required:

Step One:

• Make a hole on the bottom of the cardboard
• Slide the paper straw into the bottom opening
• Next, make a hole on both sides of the spool, right in the center (this is where the beads will be attached)

Step Two:

• Cut 2 six-inch-long pieces of ribbon or twine
• Tie a knot on one end of ribbon and, using your glue
• Affix the ribbon to one of the side holes on the spool.
• Repeat steps for the other side

Step Three:

• Measure and cut 3.25-inch circles from card stock
• Embellish two card stock circles with decorative washi tape

Step Four:

• Glue the decorated circles onto the ribbon spools
• Pick two beads or bells and thread them through the ribbon/twine and tie a knot
• Secure the beads or bells in place with glue

Step Five:

• Make some music!

Materials:

• An ice tray
• A bowl
• 1 tablespoon of flour
• Food coloring
• Toothpicks
• Popsicle sticks 
• Paper

Instructions: 

1. First fill up the ice tray with water and then pour it into a bowl. This will help with measuring the correct amount of water.
2. Mix in the 1 tablespoon of flour into the bowl of water. The flour will help make the paint not be too watery. Mix the flower in until it has dissolved.
3. Once the flour has been mixed, have an adult help with pouring the water back into the ice tray. Make sure it is evenly distributed throughout the ice tray.
4. Start to add food coloring of your choice to each of the ice slots. Use 1 drop per slot. A little goes a long way! You can make them all different colors! Mix some of the food coloring to make more than just the standard colors. Mix the food coloring and water with a toothpick.  Keep stirring until the coloring is mixed in.
5. Put the ice tray into the freezer to let it freeze for a little bit. Check up on it to see when it has begun to freeze. Once it has a frozen layer on the top, add the popsicle sticks. Adding them now will help the sticks stay up.
6. Put the ice tray back into the freezer and wait a few more hours for them to freeze completely!
7. Once frozen completely, take them out and let them sit for about 5 minutes prior to using them. Twist the ice tray to take them out and paint away!

Supplies Needed:

• Cardboard Tube
• Decorative Washi Tape
• White Duck Tape
• Beans or Rice

Steps Required:

Step One:

• Cover your cardboard tube with white duck tape
• Add your beans or rice 
• Make sure that you tape the ends closed once your beans or rice are inside

Step Two:

• Select the decorative washi tape you want to use (maybe make a pattern?)
• Start wrapping the tape colors around your cardboard tube

Step Three:

• Make some music!

Materials:

• Construction paper in assorted colors
• Scissors
• Tape

Steps:

1. Take different colored pieces of paper and make your shapes (for example: cut 2 green circles, 2 red circles, 2 purple circles, 2 green stars, 2 red stars, 2 purple stars.) You can pick out any shapes you want! Cut out 4 different shapes in total in various colors. They should be big enough in size to put them down on the floor to step on.
2. After you have cut out all of your shapes, choose a place inside of your house to make a grid. Mix them up and spread them out. Once you have your shapes placed, place some tape on the backside of each one to secure it to the floor.
3. Play away! Have someone call out a shape and color then you have to find it and jump onto it.

Fun tip: This can also be played outside on a sunny day! Instead of cutting out shapes, get some chalk and draw the shapes yourself!
